Once reckoned by some to be New Zealand's top local group, Blam Blam Blam share a bit of their genealogy with the Swingers. An intriguing and somewhat strange trio, they have a sure-handed, full but uncluttered approach and oblique melodies, with a lot of indigenous references, as in "There Is No Depression in New Zealand," a Top 20 hit there, and included on a revised second edition of the EP. Guitars may chime like bells or whine sweetly like violins; drums aptly support muscular bass work; the vocals are a bit dry but deliver a pinch of tartness when needed. Not wildly spectacular, but definitely stimulating.
