CRAIG BEVAN AND THE TOURISTS (Buy CDs by this artist)
Looking for a Label (Generic) 1980

Weird happenings from small-town Pennsylvania. Bevan (lead vox, keyboards, songwriting) and his three fellow travelers make tuneful pop-rock that sounds like an American equivalent of early XTC, though not as giddily offbeat. At their best (which is at least half the album), these lads give most of their indie peers a run for their money — that is, except for the lyrics, which are a bit thick. Odd coincidence (?): Philadelphia's Pliars used the same stock photo of a '50s teen party for the cover of their '82 LP.

[Jim Green]
