FLAMIN' OH'S (Buy CDs by this artist)
Flamin' Oh's (Fat City) 1980

As Flamingo, this Minnesota quartet that was a leading light on the late-'70s local scene failed to capitalize on its strengths. And this subsequent album suggests why. It opens with the stellar "I Remember Romance," introducing itself with an electric piano and guitar flourish and charging ahead gallantly in a faintly Springsteenish manner. But, after that, the rushed pace reduces the material to the work of an overexcited bar band. And reliance on cheesy-sounding electric piano instead of more majestic organ doesn't help, either.

[Jim Green]
