POOPSHOVEL (Buy CDs by this artist)
Opus Lengthemus (Community 3) 1989
I came, I saw, I had a hotdog (Community 3) 1991

If not for the bizarre lyrics (in songs like "Young People in Love Are Hardly Ever Hungry," the cautionary "African Bees" or the womb-delivered "Earliness Factor"), singer Bill Crawford's unpredictable jazz trumpet interpolations would be this raucous Madison, Wisconsin quartet's strangest feature. As it is, Opus Lengthemus rambles imaginatively and excitingly through wicked noise-punk, understated rock-pop and crude fusion, all united under the band's oblique worldview. A bit sophomoric at times, but otherwise smart and involving.
