SUPERSNAZZ (Buy CDs by this artist)
I Wanna Be Your Love EP (Lucky) 1993
Superstupid! (Sub Pop) 1993

Taking their band name from a Flamin Groovies album, these four Tokyo women — singer/guitarist Spike, guitarist Kanako, bassist Tomoko and drummer Skinny Minny — play their infectious garage-rock with a brutal authority that belies the submissive image of Japanese women. Both of the quartet's US releases were recorded at Seattle's Egg Studios with Fastbacks/Young Fresh Fellows guitarist Kurt Bloch producing. The full-length Superstupid! mixes fast-and-hard originals (including one called "Uncle Wiggly") with delirious covers of Link Wray, Holland-Dozier-Holland and the Rivingtons' "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow." The five-song I Wanna Be Your Love — recorded before but released after Superstupid! — features a pair of Sonics songs, the Groovies' "Teenage Head" and a different, less effective take of "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow." As often as not, it's hard to tell just what language Spike is shouting in, but execution this spirited means it hardly matters.
