Fascinating, intense rock with a strong beat and provocative, depressed, introspective lyrics. Western Eyes has an uncanny knack for throwing in the right musical effect at just the right spot to heighten the drama and tension. Robert Poss, the mainman of this New York quartet, plays guitar, sings and writes most of the material. (Poss went on to form Band of Susans with bassist Ron Spitzer.) The blend of dance rhythms with blazing raveup guitar noise on discernible tunes makes the album exciting and gutsy; lines like “How many things have I done just to add to my list or impress someone…” evince intelligence and talent. A great record.
