 the producers

Looking over the TP 50 all time greatest LP's (I'm still hoping for a forthcoming 51-100 list...someday) reveals a large percentage of the albums that Shel Talmy produced. Is Talmy THE producer of the 60's? What was his golden touch? How did he achieve such spectacular results with so many different bands? Or was he just 'in with the right bunch of fellas?'

If the TP all time 50 list, shines direct light on his accomplishments, are there other notable recordings by Talmy to check out as further evidence of his superior talents?

Could Steve Albini's efforts be worthy consideration as the "Talmy of the 90's?"

Besides Martin (beatles), who are the producers that have been instumental in capturing the cataclysmic essence of rock?

I saw the Producers on a triple bill with Squeeze and A Flock of Seagulls way back in '82. One of the first bands I ever saw that had a bald guy in it.

That's funny, Brad - I initially thought STEVE's post was about the band too. When I was 14 in '82, I woulda thought that triple bill was pretty rad.

Getting to the actual question at hand though, I'd say Steve Lillywhite was a defining producer of the 80s at least. Dunno what he's been up to since then....

Last I heard, Steve Lillywhite had just been named senior vice president of A&R at Columbia records. I think he had still been producing records up until then, though.

Nick Lowe was pretty infallible for a time. Elvis Costello has never been as good as he was on those first five albums Lowe produced.

But besides Costello, he was behind early singles by the Damned & the Pretenders, Wreckless Eric, his own stuff, etc. So whether he was the definitive producer of a certain time is debatable, but he definitely helped guide the more songwriterly branch of punk.

And it gets overlooked, but he was probably pretty instrumental in the creation of alt-country - nobody talks about it anymore, but I'm betting Carlene Carter's MUSICAL SHAPES was the first country album lots of young punks & new wavers took the time to listen to because of Lowe and Dave Edmunds' involvement in it.

My entries:

Jimmy Miller - Stones "grand slam" (Beggars thru Exile) (amazing what maracas can do to hold a song together)

Chris Thomas - (I'm sure he's done some lousy stuff but I'm thinking vintage Roxy and Pretenders debut)

Martin Hannett (whether Joy Division sounded sluggish or transcendental depended on whether he was in the room)

Mutt Lange (go ahead, laugh, but play Highway to Hell and compare it to any AC/DC that came before it in terms of clarity and sheer, punishing power)

John Cale (the Zelig of 70s demimonde)

Brian Eno (Talking Heads, Devo debut, self, some Irish band)

Speaking of Rick Rubin, now that he's made Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond hip for a younger generation to like, who's the next old-timer in need of his services?

When I was 14 in '82, I thought saying pretty rad was totally awesome.

You won't see me laugh at Mutt Lange. Metal just wasn't pop until the Mutt. Listen to the Def Leppard release before Lange and then listen to Pyromania (Lange's pop masterpiece).

SPOT. The anti-producer.
Morrisey/Marr were damn good producers as was Jimmy Page.
George Jones needs Rick Rubin. So does Bo Diddley and, uh, Willy Deville.

 Great Albini Quotes

#1 - "You need to have a different relationship with the vagina."
While you're making the record, you're sort of prevented from appreciating it on that level because you can't allow yourself to be distracted by your enthusiasm and ignore problems as they come up. So you're sort of like a gynecologist in a sense. Like you're working up close and personal with a vagina but you really shouldn't allow yourself to get turned on by it, because you've got a job to do.

here's that one about the Pixies from Albini, tho he apparently backed away from it later:

"Their willingness to be 'guided' by their manager, their record company and their producers is unparalleled. Never have I seen four cows more anxious to be led around by their nose rings."

Yeah, I tore myself away from the Three Stooges marathon to see how Dick Clark was doing and boy he didn't sound good at all. Here's some of my suggestions for acts that Rick Rubin could produce:

1. Bobby Vinton
2. Wayne Newton
3. Jim Nabors

P.S.: I think that Lester Bangs essay on New Year's Eve is the classic one on the subject

"You can't talk your way out of a belly laugh or an erection. If you see something and you explode with laughter, it doesn't matter what was going on you laughed--it's funny. And if you see a sexy scene and you get a hanger, then it worked, it was erotic, and there's no argument because, ah, the evidence is before us. And that's how I look at music"

True enough. All you can do is hope that your erection doesn't elicit a belly laugh from anyone.
