 Avant-Bubblegum
Author: MrFab

I was revisiting the utterly delightful song "My Town" by David Thomas and the Messengers (basically Pere Ubu) and the phrase 'avant-bubblegum' sprung to mind. The idea of songs that are as strange & experimental as they are short, catchy, & upbeat seemed like a wonderfully ridiculous/ridiculously wonderful concept. So what would be avant-bubblegum? Howzabout:

Can "Turtles Have Short Legs"*
Eno's "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch"
Sonic Youth "Kool Thing"
probably any number of early Talking Heads songs
The Fall "Shoulder Pads"
Devo "Peekaboo"
(Is The Residents "Constantinople" pop enough?)

*great tune; if you don't know it, check it:

That sounds like the perfect genre for They Might Be Giants.

"Constantinople" is catchy as hell. I'd also toss in "Birthday Boy" by the Residents, which regularly gets stuck in my head for days on end.

Eno's catalog is full of stuff that fits the bill:

"I'll Come Running"
"Backwater"
"King's Lead Hat"

Eno with Cale:
"Lay My Love"
"Been There, Done That"

My Bloody Valentine "When You Sleep," "Strawberry Wine"
Polyrock "Cries and Whispers," "Love Song"
Atlas Sound - "Walkabout"
Stereolab - "Strobo Acceleration," "Pack Yr Romantic Mind," "Super-Electric" (Why "Strobo Acceleration" isn't everybody's favorite Stereolab song is beyond me.)
Mercury Rev - "Something For Joey"
Cocteau Twins - "Lorelei," "Carolyn's Fingers"
Wall of Voodoo "Full of Tension"

Stereolab, of course! - they even did a song called "John Cage Bubblegum."

Because they have every other Stereolab song with the same vamping chords, Ooh-La-La femme vocals, twinky keyboards and bubbling synth loops to choose from?

Just a guess, really.

...

I love that band. Really, I do. But what John Peel had to say about The Fall could just as easily be applied to Stereolab:

"Always the same. Always different."

My favorite Stereolab song is either "Lo Boob Oscillator" or "Enivrez-Vous."

Probably the latter. It feels like a b-side, but I dig the way she sings:

"... à la vague,
à l'étoile,
à l'oiseau,
à l'horloge,
à tout ce qui fuit,
à tout ce qui gémit,
à tout ce qui roule,
à tout ce qui chante,
à tout ce qui parle ..."

...

She sounds especially French and sexy on the "parle."
