I ask Pandora to make me a "Big Star" playlist....and up comes "Sister Golden Hair."

Eeewww! That'd be enough to make me uninstall Pandora!

Whenever I first tried Pandora, I asked it for playlists centered around the MC5 and the New York Dolls. It gave me Kiss and hair metal bands for both. I haven't used Pandora since.

Yeah, the problem with Pandora is that somewhere along the way some doofus will either add crap onto a decent playlist or something decent to a crap playlist and then that spreads out to everyone else. Somebody who knew enough about Kiss's influences to add the Dolls to their Kiss playlist ended up getting Kiss added to everyone else's Dolls playlists, and Kiss brought along their hair metal friends.

Sometimes when something weird turns up it's fun to try to cipher out how the contamination happened. I'm betting that somewhere out in the Pandora database, the link between Big Star and America is Badfinger - Badfinger likely turns up on a lot of people's 70s AM radio playlists and a lot of other people's 70s power pop playlists, and thus formed the bridge over which "Sister Golden Hair" stormed Willie's Big Star station.

The Raspberries would be another possible culprit.

I find my Kate Bush Pandora playlist is quite good. Luna less so. Lori Carson quite nice.

I like a human to pick the tunes, not an algorithm.

I'll listen to Pandora at work because for some reason it makes it through the proxy server they have in the office while other internet radio sources don't. And I kind of enjoy the unpredictability of a lot of the choices it'll kick out, though sometimes there's a huge WTF in the proceedings.

I have an Ultravox playlist that usually makes me happy, except one day it got weirdly fixated on the Pet Shop Boys.

I propose a new, Pandora-based game: "Six Degrees of Sister Golden Hair."

It would be just like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" but with more blonds & less bacon.
