...deserves a TP entry. My son got a double CD of weird AL in his easter basket and has been listening to it nonstop. It contains a 12 minute song called Albuquerque which I immediately wanted to hear again.

p.s. I cant remember which song "I lost on Jeopardy" is a parody of. Can you?

"Jeopardy" ("Our love's in jeopardy") by the Greg Kihn Band.

Weird Al is exceedingly clever and a great songwriter. I don't know if he needs a TP entry, since he's pretty mainstream, but I'm all for throwing hosannahs his way. He deserves a lot more respect as a craftsperson than he gets. It's hard as hell to write new words that makes sense and fit someone else's song structures. And his songs that parody a style or mood rather than a specific song are usually even better.

Ouch! I'm terribly sorry.

All answers must be submitted in the form of a question. Hence, the correctly phrased reply would have been something akihn to:

"What is "Jeopardy" by The Greg Kihn Band?"

...

However, please accept a deluxe version of

the Jeopardy Home Edition and a copy of

"Kihnsolidation: The Best Of Greg Kihn" as consolation prizes.

And as always, thank you for playing Jeopardy! America's Favorite Quiz Show®.

UHF is way underrated.

Seriously.

Weird Al has had a pretty darn long career, and he's reached the point where a lot of pop stars consider it a compliment to have their work parodied by the guy. And the fact that Michael Jackson let him cover not one, but two of his biggest hits shows that the late King of Pop did have a sense of humor. Same can be said for Sting.

Plus, I saw him live a few years back, and it was great fun. The guy does love to entertain, and obviously, he doesn't take himself seriously.

Not TP material, I'd say ... but I sure will rise to his defense, any day of the week.

I tend to agree. However ...

There are several "novelty/parody" acts that leap to mind that do have Trouser Press entries. We can name names if that becomes necessary.
...

Really, the only entry in the Trouser Press that gives me the creeps in Madonna's and I'll tell you why:

The exact minute the following exchange in Interview Magazine occurred:

Q. - What do you think is alternative music?
M. - I guess it’s music that’s not popular. I mean, alternative to what? I guess it’s supposed to be music that makes you think, as an alternative to music that doesn’t.
Q. - So what makes Elvis Costello considered alternative?
M. - The fact that he’s not popular.
Q. - He isn’t?
M. - He’s popular in colleges, in a cult way. He’s not a popular like Milli Vanilli, right?
Q. - I guess. I’m not really sure who Milli Vanilli are.
M. - You lie, Glenn! You know who they are!
Q. - I saw them on MTV once.
M. - Don’t tell me that crap. Look, you know who they are.
Q. - They have a lot of hair, right?
M. - Do you think I’m going to fall for that? I didn’t say you had to like them, but you know who they are. Now, they are alternative music.
Q. - Were you ever alternative? Were you ever on the college-radio chart?
M. - I don’t think so. If there’s an underground disco chart, I’ve been on it.

In that instant, she should have been whisked away to whatever disco-ball-iilluminated Malebolge is reserved for marginally talented, coldly calculating, self-serving pop tarts.

As St. Lemmy (my guide, of course) and I approach, we can see Madge's feet protruding from a hole in the ground ... oily flames are dancing on her soles. She hears us and cries out:

"Se’ tu già costì ritto, se’ tu già costì ritto, Britney? Di parecchi anni mi mentì lo scritto."

Actually, her punishment will be even worse than that.

One day … she'll simply no longer be popular.

Or has that day already come and gone? I don't pay nearly enough attention to marginalia like Madonna Ciccone.

A timely reminder, since UHF will be on Turner Classic Movies this Friday night/Saturday morning at 4 a.m. Eastern.

I have to say Weird Al's stylistic parody of DEVO on "Dare To Be Stupid" deserves an entry just on its own considerable strengths. It was certainly better than anything on "Shout."

And "hear hear" to HollowbodyKay's comments of Madonna. That self-serving skank queen has disgusted me from day one. I actually bought her debut album when she was "alternative." That's right. For the first 8-9 months she was just another no-name. I got tricked into buying her debut album since it was priced for $0.50 in a bin on unwanted promo records at Crunchy Armadillo records. I saw it that cheap and since it was on Sire, a formerly reliable "New Wave" label, I took the chance. I got home and found out I'd just bought a mere disco album. The nice part of this story was that six months later, after the tedious "Holiday" made her a star, I was able to sell that record back to another used record store for $3.00 in credit! So yes, I made a 600% profit off of Madonna! Within a year I found out that the woman was even worse that her music, courtesy of a fawning media [who should have known better].

I do think Madonna belongs on this site. You don't have to interview well to be considered 'alternative'. But she definitely sticks out as a particularly mainstream alternative artist; but there're many other such examples (e.g. the Police and Prince).
