 Car Jamming!
Author: HollowbodyKay

So some @$$#*!& broke into my car this week and stole my obsolete MP3 player and my antique relic of a cell phone and a whole bunch of CDs. None of it was especially valuable and the compact discs were (((drumroll))) ... ALL COPIES!

Like infants sleeping safe in their cribs, the originals were all at home. So as PO'ed as I was over the theft, my anger was mitigated by knowing what a chump the thief must have felt like when he opened up that giant sleeve of CDs to find nothing but .. COPIES ... of stuff he probably won't be able to sell. Hell, even the originals aren't wildly popular!

"PSSSST! Hey Buddy!

Wanna buy a homemade Morrissey compilation?"

"It's truly laughable ...
Ahh-Hah-Hah-ha-ha-ha!
Ha-Ha-Ha-hah-hah!
Oh ho ho ho! Ha Ha Hah ha hah!"

...

It's a sobering thought to know that everything you own is basically flea market material waiting to happen.

Oh man, that sucks. Whenever anyone tells a car-broken-into-story, the part that causes the most empathetic anxiety is the fate of the CDs. A thief stole my sisters car. They recovered the car, but the thief had systematically snapped every CD in the car in half. What am evil motherfucker.

@Kay. Why do you make homemade Morrissey compilations? The guy is worse than the Who - he has the same songs packaged into about 19 compiations already? All with his ugly mug on the cover.

You mean I didn't have to make one CD of his stuff for free? You mean I could have bought 19 compilations of the same stuff in the stores?

There's one born every minute, I guess.

About 10-12 years back, I made a mix CD for the wife entitled Car Jamming. I suspect you have a pretty good idea what the first track is. I have no idea what else is on the disc, as its been in her car ever since. I never drive or ride in my wife's car. ..is that weird?

Well, as I was not saying:

My condolences on your losses, Kay, and even if the monetary value of what was stolen is negligible, it still sucks to go through the whole ordeal;

I would've bet my eye teeth on Morrissey circa Viva Hate...it seemed like just a matter of time, didn't it?

Two of my cars have been broken into — both parked at my own house at the time. With the first one, the thief did such a neat, clean job that I didn't notice the radio was gone until I reached to turn it on. No ripped-out wires, no damage to the dash or the locks, nothing. I almost begrudgingly admired the culprit. Had he vacuumed and dusted the interior, it would've seemed almost appropriate. Anyway, insurance paid for a new stereo. I don't recall any CDs stolen.

The second time, the thief didn't touch the stereo or the CDs in the car. He went for the low-hanging fruit — the GPS and the Bluetooth. But, again, no damage to the car.

Any of you guys ever catch such a thief in the act?

I've never owned a car worth breaking into. Dont even lock the doors. It's a good way to live. But no more than 5 CDs at a time in the car!

i flew a transatlantic flight, with my two sons (then only toddler-aged) and was quite proud to have successfully managed two active boys on a 9 hour flight and all the rest (2 hour drive to airport, check in routine, waiting endlessley for boarding, etc etc) anyone who has flown "alone" with small children will no doubt identify)

i recall discovering, and it was a truly horrible traumatic sight, as i approached my car (carrying one asleep child and holding hand of the other, and kick-pushing a luggage trolley in front of me), which had been parked in an underground garage about 100 miles away from the terminal it seemed, the 1000's of broken glass chips both inside car and on ground. there was not much to steal in my car: the radio was of the sort which is rendered inoperable if removed from dash. they got some loose change, maybe $50 "emergency cash" i had stashed in the glove and i think one of my wife's hairbrushes.

in the trunk i had a 10-cd changer. i had a custom built shelf which covered the changer and protected it from shifting cargo in the trunk (as an on-the-road salesman my trunk was always full) and alson neatly housed about 80 cds, all stolen.

this post is long enough as is so i won't list the swiped discs here, but losing my Vulgar Boatmen and Young Fresh Fellows cds still makes me sad, even though the intenets and amazon means not having to worry about replacing those, but damn if i didn't spend some time sifting through crates of cds in the 90s!

i'd iike to add it was mid-winter and had to drive 2 hours home freezing my nuts off (thank heavens for seat heating!)

fuckers

my car has been stolen and broken into a couple of times.
if i caught a guy breaking into my cAR and he stole some cds. i would ask him if he is really into the music and if he sincerely was i would let him keep them and also offer to burn him some other albums and suggest some other artists that he would also like

True story : Had my car broken into about 10 years ago and the thief apparently SELECTIVELY took cds. The way they were missing rules out random grabbing.

For some reason a thief sitting in my car judging my cds was even more disturbing than the theft.

Mats, Did he leave a note rating your collection?

"Sorry Bro, I had to steal your stuff...funds are tight these days...btw, too much Rock in your CD collection. I did need that new Exile remaster though, I hope you made a back up copy. 6/10 too much rock"

Dear victim,

I noticed that you had a copy of Exile in Guyville in your car collection. However, I've always preferred the wide-eyed innocence and low-fi charm of her Girlysound demos ... so I've opted to not remove it from your automobile.

I had a roommate who ripped me off, and among other things, stole selected CDs. I learned later that everything he took from me and my other roommate ended up in a pawn shop, so he must have taken CDs that he figured he could get something for...which were CDs by "well known" artists. This was about 15 years ago so I don't remember too many specific titles, except a few REM CDs and Exile on Mainstreet. Thankfully he left behind Place Without a Postcard and the Paul Weller titles.

I work in insurance claims. Whenever someone has a stolen CD player or something where they itemize a list of CD's (whose ACV already drops 75-80% once the cellophane's ripped off), I usually laugh at what horrendously bad taste in music they have. Just once - just once - I'd love to have someone call in and report their Smiths boxed set was stolen. Now, *that*I'd go the extra mile for.
