I also got a request for some industrial music. It was the same burnout who had requested The Byrds the night before. He launched — well, more like dribbled into an explanation of industrial music, and its history, and how it has no vocals, no lyrics, and no traditional instruments ... "just machine sounds." I actually executed two song changes while he was talking on the phone.

Finally his treatise on industrial ran out of gas. He laughed and said, "I'm sorry, man ... Look, ya gotta understand, I'm a pretty far-out kinda guy."

Then he asked, "Hey, what's your name anyway, man? Who is this?"

"My name's Delvin."

Long pause ... "Tony?"

"No, Delvin."

"Oh, Delvin! Sorry, man, I can never keep you guys on the air straight."

That is funny stuff. I take it there isn't a big market for TP-type music in Co. Springs?

Or is that just the nature of the kind of people who call in to radio stations?

I think it's just the fact that it's a late-night show. That draws the stoners and insomniacs.

Actually, late-night listeners tend to be very loyal to the radio shows they dig. When Thursday late-night was my weekly shift, I got to know some of my regular callers by name. I really liked that. They usually had cool requests. (And every other week, at least, I could count on a request for Death Cab -- always from a girl, almost always "I Will Possess Your Heart," and usually concluding with the caller saying, "Thanks! Love you! Bye!") But I usually could count on a couple of stoner calls too. No doubt, that will continue with my next radio gig in Washington.

I just loved that call Sunday morning, though. How stoned do you have to get, to hear "Delvin" and interpret it as "Tony"?

Hoip, the number is 719-473-4801 or 800-748-2727. Call any time, no matter who the DJ is. (I wonder if I'll go back to visit there and hear DJs talking about "the Anal Cunt guy.")
