David J is coming to Austin next weekend to do a solo show. I keep meaning to check out his solo records but haven't gotten around to it yet. Anybody ever seen him play outside of Love & Rockets?

I saw him once with L&R and once with Bauhaus. Neither of those help you with your decision, I know ... although he was cool to watch in both bands.

I'm already going, mainly because of an ex-Austinite's band who's opening the show and acting as J's backup band. I like what solo J I've heard, so hopefully it'll be good enough for a night out.

Songs From Another Season makes good use of the flat-out ace guitar skills of Max Eider. It's a better record than Daniel Ash's Coming Down which was done around the same time.
Max Eider is a guitar god.

Yes, I did. Pretty good show. The main set was just him and a piano player - his creative partner in his recent cabaret style solo music. Most of the songs came from his most recent album Not Long For This World. He ended the main set with "Dog End of a Day Gone By."
For the encore, he was joined by piano trio Adrian H and the Wounds, who were the opening act and do a sort of Tom Waits/Voltaire-style dark cabaret music. They did a radically rearranged "No New Tale to Tell" and finished with "Bela Lugosi's Dead." The latter seemed like an odd choice to me, but I suppose if J co-wrote it he's got as much right to perform it as Peter Murphy.
All in all a fun show. Not in my top 10 - or even my top 50 - but I'm glad I went.
