I remember seeing a great interview with him where he said he never really felt like he fit in with the band and felt like an outsider. Something like they wanted him to be the new Peter Green for them which wasn't just burdensome of course but unreasonable too.
He always seemed like a good-natured, unassuming guy, talented player too.

Then he was hurt when he wasn't inducted into the Rock Hall with the rest of Mac. I get the feeling he got a raw deal all the way 'round from them.
At the Nick Lowe show I attended recently, openers Autumn Defense played a cover of "Sentimental Lady." A lot of the lyrics make me cringe, but, man, what a melody.

A lot of people online are paying tribute to Welch with "Hypnotized," but "Sentimental Lady" is such a definitive and beautiful track for him. (And "Hypnotized" is from an album, Mystery to Me, that has one of the worst covers. . .ever: http://aguarmartin.blogspot.com/2011/01/fleetwood-mac-mystery-to-me-1973-uk.html.)

"Hypnotized" is an alluring, evocative track to be sure, but limp, emotionless pap like "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes" are prime examples of why I hated late-70s American radio. I am, however, curious to sample some of his other FM work. Oddly, his era seems to have been written out of existence if you go by what's available on the streaming sites like MOG or Spotify.

Which is, whether you like his music or not, unfair. He kept the Mac afloat in the years between Peter Green and Buckingham Nicks, after all. There are still fans out there who love his era the most.
I'm not familiar with anything other than "Sentimental Lady," so I can't comment on his other work. I'll have to look up "Hypnotized."

I lied - I do know "Hypnotized." I remember our local triple-A station becoming fond of this song for a while and putting it regular rotation in the early 90s. I thought it was a contemporary song until finally a DJ said who the artist was. I had guessed it was Martin Stephenson & the Dainties.

So, I had this post all typed and ready to go about how the title songs from Future Games and Bare Trees were two of Welch's best, but I decided I better double-check my facts. Turns out, "Bare Trees" was written by Danny Kirwan, who also wrote another great song I had forgotten about, "Sands of Time."
Whatever happened to that guy?
Man, the Fleetwood Mac history is twisted.

According to his Wikipedia page, he's endured many years of mental health issues and hasn't been involved in music for a really long time. The implication is that the pressure of trying to hold Mac together in the transitional period was too much.
All this discussion has made me really want to explore that long grey area between the Peter Green and Buckingham-Nicks eras of the Mac.

Hey, I saw Martin Stephenson and the Dainties in 1989! Having bought their tape at the show, let me tell you "Hypnotized" is in no way Martinized. It's way too smooth.
Welch was never a personal favorite (with or without the Mac), but his story's pretty heartbreaking.
If you (or Peter Green) are going to name a band Fleetwood Mac in 1967, it helps to make sure Mick & John are in it for the long haul, huh?

Martin Stephenson - huh - I remember "Wholly Humble Heart." Did all their stuff sound like that?
