 Spreading the Word
Author: hoip chiggs

Went to the beach yesterday in Ocean City, New Jersey, yesterday. As I was eating some curly fries, I saw a teenage girl on the next bench wearing a T-shirt that said "White Light" with a cross/star pattern around it. I told her that I should've worn a T-shirt that said "White Heat". She just said "Yeah", then went off with her friends before I could explain my reasoning. I only wish I was wearing wraparound shades when I spoke to her.

She probably thought you were a creepy old guy trying to hit on her obviously. Is that accurate?

perhaps, the beach kid should give the shirt back to her mom, then the mom can return it back to her mom.

One rule I follow: I don't care how cool the girl's shirt is, or how sociable she appears to be. If she doesn't look old enough to drink legally, I don't even bother to pass comment. (And if she doesn't have at least a few grey hairs or a couple lines on her face, I limit my comment to "Like your shirt.") Otherwise, I know that the "creepy old guy" suspicion is all that's waiting for me.

The wraparound shades won't help - I have some just like Lou's circa '67, and wifey said I looked like Bono (ouch!).

I also assume that I'll be taken as a creepy old guy - I mean, I was a creepy young guy, so...

This creepy old guy thing is a funny topic. I thought I was the only one who felt like that.

I don't see how any man can avoid the "creepy old guy" syndrome at some point. Well, not actually be a COG, but at least kinda feel like one.

Remember this line from Costello?

"The girl in your dreams would have you up on an under age charge."

'Twas funnier at 25.

touchet ankle deep beach wade(r). but i think that this complex sociological/scatalogical -dirty old-phenomenon extends equally not only to girls but also with boys. for xxxAMP lul, yesterday, my coworker, who is fifteen yrs my jr; glared at me for just talking about post punk with his bands singer. the guy (he is not a teenager) Andy (singer), made an interesting point. he said, 'its so hard to know where to find a musical influence from todays anger thrash (or anger something like that) without sounding all retro.

anyway, the point iz hoops, if u want to talk music with a girl/teenager/woman make sure she has a boyfriend first.

let us sip now.

I don't understand. I was raised by the movies. Burt Reynolds, Chuck Connors, David Janssen, Robert Mitchum, Lee Majors, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Charles Bronson and Ernest Borgnine were my role models.

How could I come off looking like a creep to those girls?

In one way or another ... all those guys are (or were) uber-creepy.

If some curly fries-eating old guy came up to my daughter talking about white heat (with or without wrap-around shades), I'd have whisked her away myself if she didn't do it on her own. Of course, she's six and loves curly fries, so she may have stuck around.

Look, Lou Reed is creepy, that's all there is to it. Even if the person has no idea who Lou is, the creepiness is inherent in the reference to him, and therefore manifested to the person subjected to it. No wonder she ran.
