 Best One-Chord Songs

The Normal "Warm Leatherette"
Redd Kross "Pseudo-Intellectual"
Pop-O-Pies "Fascists Eat Donuts"

I bet there's some Kraut-y/droney bands like Can or PiL who have some one-chord wonders. Maybe some James Brown funk, tho he usually 'takes it to the bridge' for another chord or two.

I am not sure if this qualifies but in The Breeders version of "Shocker in Gloomtown" Kelly Deal only plays one note through the whole damn song. Check out the strings on her guitar:

"Obsolete" by Toyah Willcox comes pretty darn close, but a second chord is whipped out just when you think "damn, this is a one chord song!" But "Warm Leatherette" is the best one chord song.

Coming up on the next installment of "Twenty Flight Rock": a tribute to John Cage, the originator of the no-chord song!

Isn't Ravel's "Bolero" like that?

"She Reached For A Light" by Robyn Hitchcock. In "A" ... I think.

An obscure Paisley Underground (nugget of the day?), but a great one:
True West - Steps To The Door
That one-note bass part has to be the easiest bass line in history.

I can't believe that "I Believe" is a one-chord song.

Is 'One Chord Wonders' by the Adverts a one chord song?

Ned: no, it's not.

How could I have mentioned The Normal without remembering Suicide? "Ghost Rider," and probably others.

An "unplugged" acoustic concert of all these songs would be quite hilarious/annoying. Esp. if it's one long medley of all of them in the same key.

Bo Diddley's original recording of Bo Diddley is pretty damn close. The whole song is one chord played to an early version of the Bo Diddley beat but he does a little effect type thing that switches to another chord. Its barely there but its technically is.

Hawkwind "Opa-Loka"
Soft Cell "Memorabilia"
Crash Course in Science "Cardboard Lamb"

and answering my own krautrock comment:
Neu! "Hallogallo"
most of Can's "Mother Sky"

Pssh, who needs three chords? That's clearly two too many.

Remember Lou's dictum on how to write a great rock 'n' roll song:

One chord is good. Two chords is pushing it. Three chords- well, you're getting into jazz territory then.

"Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin" - Sly & the Family Stone

A lot of other funk songs follow the single chord blueprint. Parliament's "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)" is a good example. And after they get the horn intro out of the way, Kool & the Gang take that one chord to the bank on "Hollywood Swinging."

I think we need clarification of "one chord song". Not all songs are chord based. Many are riff based and rooted in a single key which does not change.
For example, I would say every Rage Against The Machine song is like that. I think the rarer and more remarkable achievement is having a chord based song where they literally hammer away at a single chord with no riffing, and still somehow make something interesting of it. I mean, the tunes on Remain in Light and Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin are ultra funky and textured, and not at all monotonous sounding as "one-chord song" would seem to apply. The guitar is playing many, many chords on the Sly song. Its probably been done a bunch of times but I cant think of too many songs offhand which do it successfully.

One that comes close:

Superchunk - The Only Piece That You Get

Stereolab "Exploding Head Movie"

"Peter Gunn theme." Which may fall into what nosepail was saying about afro-funk songs.

I want to say "In Trance As Mission" but there might be a second chord in there somewhere that I'm forgetting.
