Okay, so he's not a New Waver, but still. Metaphoric hat doffed.

I'll doff my hat to him in tribute as well. Hey, he certainly entertained me a lot more in my youth than Trans-Siberian Orchestra ever has.

Rickles was in Kelly's Heroes, in which Donald Sutherland and Gavin MacLeod played beatniks ten years too early. That's kind of a forerunner to punk.

Saw him live a few years ago! He had to sit, but was still sharp as a tack. Coulda ripped Johnny Rotten to shreds.

Not many of the Rat Pack generation left. Vegas headliners nowadays tend to be of the Donny Osmond/Celine/Cirque de Whatever variety.

Is Transiberian the Christmas-show band, or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes, although it's possible that you may be thinking of Mannheim Steamroller. Trans-Siberian Orchestra definitely were.

"if they can play overblown, cheesy holiday music under an inscrutable, non-sequitur Euro-sounding name, so can we!"

And we can give all those 80s heavy metal shredders who were pink-slipped by grunge something to do!

Ah, but there is a TP connection! during the `70s when sitcoms where trying to stay relevant with the changing times, Rickles' one attempt at a TV show, CPO Sharkey, not only had a scene at a punk show but got the Dickies to play.

Oh yeah! I heard about this, but that wasn't Rickles' one attempt at a TV show; it was the one of his many efforts that managed to stick for a few years. Bonus points for connecting Don Rickles to New Wave! You shame me, sir!

Due to his confrontational nature, he definitely was the Iggy Pop of comedy. RIP, hockey puck.

If you thought that Dickies clip was cool, look for " Don Rickles Nina Hagen." And I am not making that up.

If Rickles was the Iggy of comedy ... who's the Bowie of comedy?

Robin Williams was pretty chameleonic ... and, like Bowie, his death was a huge awful surprise to most of his fans.
