Just read that Nirvana's original drummer Chad Channing is attempting a solo career. Poor guy, ya gotta feel for someone who comes that close to history, only to have it snatched away from them:
Angus MacLise - Velvet Underground's orig. drummer, quit when he thought they were selling out (by accepting a paying gig) only to frantically try to rejoin after watching the Velvets hook up w/Warhol, make albums etc.
Terry Reid - asked by Jimmy Page to sing in a band he wanted to form called the New Yardbirds; he turned Page down; the New Yardbirds changed their name; Reid vanished.
Henry Padovani - orig. Police guitarist, played on early singles, Andy Summers joined, they played as a 4-piece. But not for long.
Annette Zilinskas - quit the Bangles to join go-nowhere country-punks Blood on the Saddle; of course the Bangles started sucking, but they sucked all the way to the bank.
Arabian Prince - orig. NWA rapper, apparently squeezed out after Ice Cube joined.
And how do all those members of The Quarrymen feel?

Terry Reid didn't vanish - he's had a long solo career, with some fairly acclaimed records. Of course, said career has never come close to the success of Led Zeppelin, but he continues to put out albums, is still in great voice and seems perfectly content with his choice.

Vince Clarke had an okay career with Erasure, but you have to wonder if he ever looks at the success Depeche Mode had after he left and thinks Shit!
Steven Duffy from the Lilac Time who jumped ship from Duran Duran before they hit it big.
John Augustynyak? Was that his name? Hightailed it out of 10,000 Maniacs, watched them become huge, rejoined after Natalie Merchant left and they promptly quit selling records.
EDIT: John Lombardo was the guy in 10,000 Maniacs. Who are listed in the T section rather than the # section on this site. Which is fine, although I briefly thought their entry had disappeared.

And how about Carlo Little (RIP), the drummer for Screaming Lord Sutch, who was asked by a struggling group called the Rolling Stones to join them. Thinking that this lot wasn't going to last too long compared to his steady job w/the Good Lord Sutch, he turned them down & gave them a piece of paper w/the name of a drummer friend of his. So that's how the Hand o' Destiny touched Mr. Charlie Watts.

I just never heard of Mr. Reid until last week, but, yeah, I did read he had a number of solo albums. I did just hear AC/DC with their original lead singer Dave Evans. Check this vid:

Hey, leave the Rollers out of this. I like them. I also happen to remember that one of the first days I ever worked with the venerable Ira Robbins, he was listening to the Rollers at his desk. Said he was simply "in the mood" for them that day. That impressed me as being very unelitist.

Oh I loves them Rollers meself, you can't get too bubblegum for me, just thought it was an amusing contrast between their early style and the later headbangin' stuff they became known for. Dave Evans has his own band, he says he's happy (but they all say that, don't they?)
Saw posted this on another site: "I used to work at Liverpool Our Price with the original Stone Roses bassist. He was constantly gutted about them making it so big just after he left and refused to have their records played in store"

And I'm not sure Erasure did so much worse than Depeche Mode, although they did far better in England than they did here (20 top 10 UK hits). I was surprised to learn they've sold 25 million records worldwide ...

In that case, Vince Clarke probably isn't too bummed. And if he had stuck with DM, chances are they wouldn't have turned to the techno-goth gloominess that made them so popular with millions of depressed teenagers worldwide. So most likely both DM and Clarke benefitted by him leaving.

John Berry: founding Beastie Boy
I thought of this thread whilst reading about the recently deceased MCA. Apparently they had an original member who played on their early (pre-"Licensed To Ill") recordings: "John Berry left the group in 1983, later forming Thwig, Big Fat Love, and Bourbon Deluxe." Umm, anyone ever heard of those bands?
